Discovery and Understanding of Country
Abstract
The fundamental Indigenous concept of manauoomillyan - “taking care” - is synonymous with the goal of sustainability in modern science. Through sound understanding of our environment, we developed a truly sustainable way of life with minimal negative impact on our surroundings and which dealt successfully with both short - and long - term climatic changes. Ours is a very wholistic approach which considers how everything is related to each other. In comparison, ‘modern science’ tends to be very compartmentalised. Therefore, by combining these knowledges rather than considering each in isolation, a much greater data set could be generated. In this context our medicines are derived completely from nature – a totally sustainable resource. Modern analytical techniques may enable us to identify the active organic compounds and minerals present. The ultimate goal is that these treatments we have developed since the beginning of time will inevitably provide alternative medicines that will be available to all Australians both now and into the future.
Biography
Brett Rowling is a direct descendant national figure Bungoree and Matora of the GuriNgai and Awabakal peoples who inhabited the Central Coast of NSW.
Bungoree was a mariner, diplomat and leader who was involved with the development of the early colony through various sea voyages with the Navy. Arguably his most famous contribution was to be the first Australian to circumnavigate Australia when he enabled Captain Mathew Flinders to do so with HMS Investigator (1802-1803).
It is through these coastal journeys that Brett’s presentation will provide a holistic approach to multidisciplinary subject matters which is a trait that Indigenous Australians utilise as opposed to the European approach whereby individuals confine themselves to specific areas of expertise. This will highlight subject matters such as the complex nature of nations, the sharing of knowledge, trade of goods on trackways still utilised today, the mathematics of marriage applied to determine long term environmental changes, engineering of tools and implements for longevity, the use of astrology to predict seasons and medicinal chemistry. This sharing of knowledge and teaching through oral channels of our traditions is still practiced today. More recently, current research with modern instrumental techniques have provided empirical evidence of the effectiveness of the natural processes and products that have been well established, understood and applied by Indigenous Australians long before European arrival. By merging these modern techniques to our Indigenous knowledge, the use of the natural environment and its processes could provide sustainable solutions for current problems. Or more succinctly in Brett’s own language: manauoomillyan - “taking care”
