Better together: collaboration between teletrial programs in Victoria brings results

Abstract

The governments of Australia and Victoria have invested in reform programs to achieve equitable cancer outcomes for all Victorians regardless of their place of residence. These programs have identified teletrials (TT) as a fundamental component for providing access to clinical trials closer to where people live.

The Victorian Teletrial Collaborative (VTC) was formed in 2021 by three programs:
1) Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre Alliance (VCCC Alliance) Teletrials program
2) Regional Victorian Trials Alliance, Linkages, Special populations, Equity (ReViTALISE) program managed by the Regional Trials Network (RTN)
3) Australian Clinical Trials Network, TrialHub Alfred (TrialHub)

Through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) the partners committed to establishing guiding principles (respect, collaboration, acknowledgement, accountability, evaluation and sustainability), to implement a common program of work, aimed at increasing participation in clinical trials for people living in regional areas (and rare diseases even within metropolitan settings) by addressing current procedural and operational challenges to the implementation of teletrials.

A workplan was developed at a workshop in Dec 2021 with each partner leading on a mutually agreed program of work. This workplan was aligned with the work of the Australian Teletrial Program. An evaluation plan was developed including attribution of success to funding bodies. A substantial number of publications, reports, toolkits and templates has been developed to support the implementation of teletrials which will be presented at this meeting.

The VTC demonstrates the value of collective impact and the benefits of cross organisational collaboration in the clinical trial sector.
