Chair: Emergence of digital health – potential for healthcare and access challenges
Abstract
Digital health has evolved to support & empower patients across the care continuum right from diagnostic to precision medicine, patient monitoring, to decision support and disease management. Among its many benefits, it can provide added convenience and access to healthcare. It can offer more affordable healthcare and empower people to take greater control of their own health conditions reducing burden on healthcare system. In this respect Digital therapeutics and diagnostics (DTxD) can play a vital role in treating a disease, managing a disease and improve health function and or prevent a disease. Yet the reimbursement pathway for DTxD is poorly defined and most DTxD need to rely on existing pathways that are designed for pharmaceuticals or medical devices specifically. This creates added complexity and burden of proof on sponsors. This session will review the current state of access to DTxD in Australia and its potential to improve healthcare delivery characterized by skill shortages and rising patient wait times. It will also identify key barriers to patient access and talk about changes that are needed to enable future access to DTxD in Australia.
