Abstract
"Burnout" is ubiquitous. We have all heard about it and its consequences. How can we prevent it and manage it?
The psychologist Herbert Freudenberger is credited with bringing the term “burnout” into the research lexicon in 1974, defining it as the loss of motivation, growing sense of emotional depletion, and cynicism.
In 2022, Australian workers suffered a higher level of burnout at work compared to anywhere else in the world.
A new report found that 62 per cent of Australian employees were experiencing burnout, compared with a global average of 48 per cent.
It was even higher for Managers with 66 per cent reporting burnout as opposed to 53 per cent globally. Working in the Therapeutics industry can be very stressful- constant attention to detail, ever-changing regulations, a high level of responsibility, multiple priorities and deadlines, all create an environment that is inducive to burnout.
However, burnout is not just occupational, in can also be caused by non-work, or personal factors.
Burnout is a condition that leaves its mark on the brain as well as the body and can alter neural circuits, ultimately causing a vicious cycle of neurological dysfunction leading to impairments in cognitive and emotional processing.
